New self-help groups for newly diagnosed people

Self-help group7.jpgHave you been diagnosed with MS within the past two to five years? If so, you probably have a lot of questions and concerns. Or, you may be feeling so overwhelmed by the diagnosis that you aren't sure what kinds of questions to ask. We are pleased to offer two new self-help groups to give you the information and support you need to live more comfortably and confidently with this change in your life.

Moving On 

Join us at our office in Center City Philadelphia to gain peer support and receive information about the latest research, treatments, and programs and services available for people living with MS.
  • Kick-off meeting: Wednesday, July 24 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
  • Regular meetings: The fourth Wednesday of each month from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

MS 101 Telephone Support Group

This educational series and support group offers you the opportunity to participate from the comfort of your own home. Topics include symptoms and treatment options, fatigue management, and effects on the family.
  • Kick-off meeting: Thursday, September 5 from 7 to 8 p.m.
  • Regular meetings: The first Thursday of each month from 7 to 8 p.m.

The National MS Society and the Somers Point Jazz Society invite you to The Right Notes: Wine Tasting and Jazz Event on Thursday, October 17. Join us for an evening of great music, superb wines and philanthropy. Enjoy 'The Latin Side of Jazz', a celebration of Latin music's influence on jazz since the 1940's, presented by renowned tenor saxophonist Dr. Michael Pedicin and his quartet.

Don't miss what Bicycling Magazine has called the "Best Cycling Getaway in New Jersey". Register now and be there as we ride through some of the most scenic routes in New Jersey to make a difference in the fight against MS.

Don't want to ride but still want to be part of the fun? Sign up to volunteer during the summer or ride weekend. There are a variety of jobs available and all ages and groups are welcome.

 

New recordings available on Podbean

Check out the new recordings available on our Podbean channel, including all nine presentations from the 2013 LINKS Teleconference Series that took place in April and May 2013. The aim of this series was to "link" people living with MS with information and tips on how to maintain quality of life in the years ahead.

The presentation from the Improving Independence in Progressive MS Teleconference that took place on June 12 provides information about how to navigate the world of assistive technology and ways to modify your environment, at home and at work, to optimize independence.

Why America can never give up on medical research

This article appeared in The Week on July 12. In America we spend roughly $140 billion on medical research every year. One-third of that is from the federal government. Over half - 54 percent - comes from industry, and nearly all the rest comes from universities, philanthropic foundations, independent research institutions, and what most statisticians labels imply as “Other.” The contributions of these voluntary, nongovernment, and nonprofit institutions is calculated, then shrugged off, as people return to talking about the worth of federal NIH funding or deride the evils of pharmaceutical companies. July 22 - Northampton County Community Outreach Day

Staff will be at St. Luke's Neurology Associates in Bethlehem from noon to 8 p.m. to answer your questions about MS and the latest research, discuss the programs and services available in your community, and provide assistance with referrals to physicians, allied health professionals and other service agencies. July 29 - Gloucester County Community Outreach Day

September 21 and 22 - Bike MS: Bike to the Bay

This year, our friends at the Delaware Chapter are hosting the 30th annual Bike to the Bay event. This two-day cycling adventure will take you through the quaint, rural towns of southern Delaware all the way to the coastline. Learn more.

Support the 2013 MS Leaders Circle

The MS Leaders Circle is composed of upwardly mobile business professionals in the greater Philadelphia region who want to make a difference in their community by undertaking a fundraising campaign to benefit local people living with MS. You can show your support by participating in one of their upcoming fundraising events, including a designer handbag bingo party in Feasterville, Pa. on July 26, a guest bartending night in Philadelphia on August 14, and a family-friendly event at the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, N.J. on August 28.
